Bocas del Toro
Where the jungle meets the archipelago.
Thirty minutes past the Costa Rica border, the road ends and the water begins. Bocas del Toro is a scatter of islands in the Caribbean Sea — colorful wooden houses on stilts, clear water in every shade of green, and a pace of life that makes you forget what day it is.
We've been running this route since 2014. We know every border hour, every water taxi schedule, and every reason why the crossing goes smoothly when you know what you're doing — and sideways when you don't.
Whether you're coming for a day trip from Puerto Viejo or staying a week in the archipelago, here's everything you need to know before you go.
Getting to Bocas del Toro
The only land crossing between Costa Rica and Bocas del Toro is at Sixaola–Guabito. From there, a short water taxi ride takes you to Isla Colón, the main island. The whole journey from Puerto Viejo takes about 3 to 4 hours depending on border wait times.

Before you go
Border crossing
Bring your passport and proof of onward travel. The Sixaola–Guabito crossing is straightforward but can have wait times. Our shuttles include border assistance.
Cash at the border
There's a $1 exit fee leaving Costa Rica and an entry fee entering Panama. Have small bills in USD or colones.
Weather
Bocas has two dry seasons: February–April and September–October. The rest of the year expect afternoon rain — it clears fast and everything stays green.
Luggage
Shared shuttles allow 1 large bag + 1 carry-on. Extra luggage fee applies. Private vans have no restrictions.
While you're there
Bocas is best explored by water. Red Frog Beach on Isla Bastimentos, the shallow snorkeling at Starfish Beach, and the mangrove channels around Isla Colón are the highlights most people come for.
If you're staying overnight, Bocas Town on Isla Colón has everything from budget hostels to boutique hotels. The restaurant scene is small but good — fresh seafood, Caribbean rice and beans, and cold Balboa beer on a dock.
Common questions
Most nationalities don't need a visa for Panama for stays under 180 days. Check your country's specific requirements. Our team can advise — just ask when booking.
